Homemade Mustang Bars

Umm.... wow. Yum. Yum. Yum. For real. This is some serious goodness. I am typically a 'one is enough' gal but these had me reaching for another one immediately after my first one. And so the pattern began...

I am calling these 'Homemade Mustang Bars' because I got the idea from Paleo Treats. Note, I have not actually had their 'Mustang Bars.' And call me crazy, but I'm not going to spend $45.00 for 10 bars. But they looked interesting, so I looked at the ingredient list and made my own (omitting the almond flour and adding macadamia nuts). 

Obviously, I have no idea the portions that they used to make theirs so I basically did mine based on experience and what I had on hand.




Homemade Mustang Bars

1/3 cup pumpkin seeds, lightly salted
1/3 cup (crunchy) almond butter
1/3 cup raw walnuts, crumbled
1/3 cup unsweetened coconut flakes 
1/4 cup raw macadamia nuts
1/4 cup raisins 
2 tbls vanilla
3 tbls honey
1/3 cup coconut oil (melted) 

Method: 

Well, my food processor is still taking some time off so I mixed this together by hand. Simply add all of the ingredients in one by one in the order that it is listed above, mixing the melted (30 seconds will do) coconut oil and honey in last. 

Form bars, wrap in cellophane and store in the fridge. 

Yields ~ 8 bars    

Now, having had these, I will say I would definitely pay $4.50 for one bar. So, mad props to Paleo Treats

I need another word for YUM...

  1. I've got a new recipe that I think tastes EXACTLY like mustang bars. Please try and let me know what you think ;-)

    Chop/food process these ingredients:
    1 cup slivered almonds
    1 cup walnuts
    1 cup toasted pumpkin seeds (sometimes called pepitas)

    Add in the following
    1 cup raisins
    1/4 cup of coconut oil (doesn't need to be melted)
    1/4 cup of almond butter
    1/4 cup of almond meal
    1/3 cup of honey
    1/4 tsp salt
    3 tsp vanilla

    Directions: Stir together till all ingredients are mixed thoroughly. Spoon in about 1/4 cup of mixture into muffin liners. This make quite a bit, almost 25 mustang bars (depending on how full you fill your liners). Place them in the fridge and chill. Eat. YUM!

    1. I can't tell you how grateful I am that you posted this recipe ! The only change I made is that I used sugar free honey and I know that cut the carbs way down . Tate's exactly like their mustang treat. And for a heck of a lot cheaper! YOU ROCK !!!

  5. Just wanted to say thanks! I will be trying these soon. Also, when companies label food products, the HAVE to write the label out with the ingredients that are most used to less used in the food. For example, in the case of Mustang Bars, Almond Butter is the first ingredient. So that means that of all the ingredients, Almond butter is the most. Salt is listed as the last ingredient, therefore there is the least amount of salt. This is regulated by the FDA for all foods on the market and is consistent for all food labels. (source: ME...I used to work for a food manufacturer in the ingredients and labeling department.)

  7. I tried both recipes and I like the first one the best.

    Disclaimer: I first tried the recipe that Anonymous from October 29, 2013 at 1:31 PM posted... but I used my wife's food processor too long. But the almond butter was too overpowering.

    The second round, I tried the original recipe and mixed it by hand. It's really good. It's not as good as Paleo Treats' Mustang Bar, but damn close.

    It's still not cheap to make. When I first tried PT's bar I had sticker shock. But now after spending $$$ at the grocery store on ingredients, I can see why the cost is high.

    And their quality control is a heckuvalot better than mine. Not all of mine tasted the same.
